Surefire Ways to Success

You’ve heard it for years. “Be careful of the company you keep.” Often this quote is used to remind us to be aware of groups of people that can influence us to make poor choices that might have long-lasting negative consequences. So it sort of goes without saying that it’s important to choose friends that won’t lead you down a path that drops off in a downward spiral.

But that quote is SO MUCH BIGGER than what not to do with your life. Let’s think of it in terms that are less about how others can impact you negatively and more about how the right people can impact you positively. If you want to be successful, you need to surround yourself with successful people. It’s true that success is defined differently for each person, but you know success when you see it. And when you do see it, immerse yourself into that circle of influence. Sometimes that’s easier in some situations over others but here are some surefire ways to make it happen:

Seek a mentor. Many successful leaders love to invest their time in others who are genuinely interested in working hard to achieve their goals. Find that person. Ask humbly for their mentorship. Then dig in and work hard, but most importantly, don’t ever make them regret saying “yes” to you.

Make it happen. Don’t wait for the perfect situation to fall into your lap, because guess what—it won’t. If you’re not actively working to connect with the right people through groups like your local chamber of commerce, social service clubs like Rotary, or young professionals organizations, you might miss some perfect opportunities.

Serve with a smile. When you’re first starting out, you may not have the experience you need to capture the attention of the most seasoned veterans in your field. That’s where some humility comes in handy, because that may mean you start out getting people’s coffee or hauling around the signage for events in order to break into that circle of influence that you so desperately desire to be a part of. People notice strong work ethics and attitudes. Do EVERYTHING to the best of your ability and with a positive attitude.
